Antonio Lotti is reported to have studied in Venice under maestro Giovanni Legrenzi, one of the leading Venetian composers of the late 17th century. According to multiple sources, including Riemann’s musical dictionary and later biographical summaries, Lotti received part of his musical training from Legrenzi during his youth in Venice.
English-language sources note that oral tradition places the beginning of Lotti’s studies with Giovanni Legrenzi around 1682, when both Legrenzi and Lodovico Fuga were active at St Mark’s Basilica. Although documentary evidence is lacking, the tradition consistently associates Lotti’s early formation with Legrenzi, linking the young composer to the prestigious musical environment overseen by Legrenzi at San Marco shortly before the latter’s death in 1690.
