Antonio Salieri was a student and follower of Christoph Willibald Gluck. He became acquainted with Gluck through Florian Leopold Gassmann, and Gluck remained an informal advisor to him. Salieri later continued to perfect his compositional skills under Gluck’s guidance, and Gluck regarded him as one of his most promising followers.
Salieri developed Gluck’s artistic principles, adopting and extending his ideas of operatic reform, including the subordination of music to dramatic expression and the pursuit of clarity, simplicity, and emotional truth. Gluck strongly influenced Salieri’s creative direction, and Salieri incorporated core elements of Gluck’s reformist aesthetics into his own operas.
