Antonio Uberti → Nicola Porpora

Studied under

Antonio Uberti, known as Porporino, studied under the composer and vocal teacher Nicola Porpora at the Conservatorio Sant'Onofrio in Naples. After being castrated at the age of 13, Uberti was brought to Porpora by a priest who had noticed his promising voice. Under Porpora’s instruction at Sant'Onofrio, he received a solid and rigorous vocal education comparable to that given to other renowned castrati such as Farinelli and Caffarelli.

The artistic pseudonym "Porporino" was directly derived from the name of his teacher, reflecting both the common practice of the time and Uberti’s personal connection to Porpora. His later success as a celebrated contralto castrato was consistently attributed to the vocal technique, stylistic discipline, and expressive traditions he learned from Porpora, whose teaching deeply shaped his career.
