Auguste Kreutzer studied violin under his elder brother Rodolphe, receiving his earliest instruction from him before continuing as his pupil when the Paris Conservatory opened in 1795, where Rodolphe served as professor and Auguste inherited much of his distinctive playing style.
The two were closely related professionally as well, with Auguste later succeeding Rodolphe in 1826 as professor of violin at the Conservatory, reflecting a continuity of their contributions to the French violin school.
