Carlo Coccia studied under Giovanni Paisiello in Naples, where Paisiello was one of his principal teachers during his early musical education. This mentorship in Coccia’s native city provided him with foundational training in composition and directly connected him to the Neapolitan musical environment in which Paisiello was a leading figure.
Paisiello’s influence extended beyond formal instruction: he introduced Coccia to King Joseph Bonaparte, for whom Coccia subsequently became a private musician. Paisiello also supported Coccia’s early career, helping to ensure the success of Coccia’s second opera in 1808 after his first opera had failed.
