Caesar Cui studied under Stanisław Moniuszko during Cui’s youth in Vilna (Vilnius). Moniuszko, already an established composer living in the city, recognized Cui’s musical talent and offered to give him free lessons in harmony. These studies lasted for seven months and represented Cui’s first formal instruction in music theory from a professional composer.
The brief but significant mentorship provided Cui with foundational knowledge at a formative stage of his development. Although the article does not describe further long-term collaboration, Moniuszko’s instruction played an important early role in Cui’s musical education before he later joined the circle of Russian composers known as the Mighty Handful.
