Christian Cannabich studied violin under Jan Václav Antonín Stamic (Johann Wenzel Anton Stamitz) in Mannheim during his youth. As a boy, Cannabich received his principal musical training directly from Stamic, who was then the concertmaster and later the director of the Mannheim court orchestra. Beginning his studies before joining the orchestra as a scholar in 1744, Cannabich learned violin performance and orchestral technique under Stamic’s guidance.
This teacher‑student relationship placed Cannabich within the core of the emerging Mannheim school. Stamic, recognized as its founder, shaped Cannabich’s musicianship during the crucial formative years leading up to Cannabich’s eventual role as one of Mannheim’s leading violinists and later its orchestral director. Cannabich continued to build upon Stamic’s legacy throughout his career, especially after being called back to Mannheim in 1757 to assume Stamic’s former position following his mentor’s death.
