Claudio Monteverdi → Marc'Antonio Ingegneri

Studied under

Claudio Monteverdi studied under Marc'Antonio Ingegneri in Cremona from his childhood years. Ingegneri, who served as maestro di cappella at Cremona Cathedral from 1581 until 1592, supervised Monteverdi’s earliest musical education, teaching him composition, singing, and the playing of viol-family instruments. Under Ingegneri’s guidance, Monteverdi acquired a solid foundation in counterpoint and 16th‑century polyphonic technique, which shaped his first published works, including the motet collection Sacrae cantiunculae (1582) and the madrigals Madrigali Spirituali (1583).

Ingegneri, himself trained in the traditions of the Roman school and a respected composer of sacred music, exposed Monteverdi to the works of leading masters such as Palestrina and Lassus. He played a decisive role in developing Monteverdi’s mastery of polyphonic writing and preparing him for his later innovations in madrigal and operatic style.
