Ercole Bernabei was a pupil of Orazio Benevoli in Rome, where he received his musical education under the renowned Baroque composer. This teacher–student relationship placed Bernabei within the Roman sacred music tradition shaped by Benevoli, whose influence was significant in Bernabei’s early development as a composer, organist, and chapel master.
Benevoli, already an established maestro di cappella in several major Roman churches, included Bernabei among his notable students, and Bernabei’s later accomplishments in Roman musical institutions reflect the training he received from his teacher. Bernabei’s eventual succession to important posts in Rome, and later his prestigious appointment at the Cappella Giulia after Benevoli’s death in 1672, further demonstrate the lasting impact of Benevoli’s mentorship.
