Ferdinand Ries received early cello instruction from Bernhard Romberg, who was a member of the Bonn Hofkapelle and played alongside Ries’s father. Romberg guided Ries’s first studies on the instrument when the latter was still a young child, providing foundational training that complemented the piano and violin lessons Ries received from his family.
Years later, when Ries was touring Russia between 1810 and 1812, he reunited with his former teacher Romberg, and the two musicians performed concerts together across Western Russia. Their collaboration during this period marked a renewed professional connection following Romberg’s early role in Ries’s musical formation.
