Ferdinand von Hiller studied under Johann Nepomuk Hummel after his father sent him to Weimar at the age of ten due to his early musical talent. Hiller devoted himself to composition while under Hummel’s guidance and participated in work on the opera Maria Stuarts, which also led to his acquaintance with Goethe. His studies with Hummel significantly improved his pianistic abilities, enabling him to begin concert activity by early 1827.
The relationship between Hiller and Hummel was that of a young prodigy receiving formative training from an established composer and virtuoso. Hummel’s instruction played a crucial role in shaping Hiller’s early development as both a pianist and composer, providing him with the technical foundation and artistic exposure that influenced his later career.
