Francesco Scarlatti was the younger brother of Alessandro Scarlatti, and his early career benefited from Alessandro’s influence, particularly when he secured a position at the Neapolitan Royal Court while Alessandro served as maestro di cappella to the viceroy of Naples. Although Francesco lived largely in the shadow of his more famous brother, Alessandro’s prominence in the Neapolitan and Roman musical spheres formed an important part of the family’s artistic environment.
Alessandro, celebrated as a foundational figure of the Neapolitan opera school, maintained a highly successful career in Naples and Rome, where he produced influential operas, cantatas and sacred works. His stature and connections likely contributed to Francesco’s opportunities, while Francesco’s own musicianship added to the broader Scarlatti family legacy. Their relationship also linked Francesco to Alessandro’s musical circle, which included significant figures such as Queen Christina of Sweden, Cardinal Ottoboni and the Medici court.
