Frederic Chopin → Wojciech Zywny

Studied under

Frédéric Chopin studied under Wojciech Żywny from 1816 to 1821 in Warsaw, beginning formal piano lessons at the age of seven. Żywny, a Czech-born pianist, violinist, and composer who had become a respected teacher in Warsaw, introduced the young Chopin to the works of Bach, Haydn, Clementi, and Mozart, thereby shaping his earliest musical foundations. Żywny regarded himself as part of the Bach tradition, and through him Chopin developed a lifelong admiration for Bach that influenced his artistic outlook.

Żywny closely guided Chopin’s early development not only as a pianist but also as a budding composer; he likely helped record and edit Chopin’s earliest works, such as the 1817 G minor polonaise, when the child composer had not yet fully mastered musical notation. Chopin’s rapid progress led Żywny to end the lessons after six years, believing he could teach the young prodigy no more. Despite this, Chopin retained deep respect for his first professional teacher, later dedicating his 1821 Polonaise in A-flat major to Żywny and recalling him fondly in correspondence even after achieving international fame.
