Friedrich Wilhelm Pixis studied under Giovanni Battista Viotti during a brief but significant period in 1798. At the time, Pixis was a 13‑year‑old virtuoso, and Viotti, having been expelled from England, was residing on the estate of the English merchant John Smith in Schenefeld near Hamburg. During these months, Pixis received private lessons from Viotti, an influential master of the Italian and French violin traditions.
Sources describe this period as lasting about a month, during which Viotti provided intensive instruction that contributed to Pixis’s early development. Later biographical accounts emphasize that Viotti recognized Pixis's exceptional talent and gave him personal guidance, which helped shape the foundation of the style Pixis would later bring to Prague, where he became a leading violin teacher and a founder of the local violin school.
