In 1773, Georg Joseph Vogler, dissatisfied with the teaching methods of Padre Martini in Bologna, went to Padua where he studied for five months under the Italian theorist and composer Francesco Antonio Vallotti. This period of instruction exposed Vogler to Vallotti’s theoretical principles, which later influenced Vogler’s own writings on harmony, even though he applied them in a highly empirical manner.
