Gioachino Rossini → Stanislao Mattei

Studied under

Gioachino Rossini studied under Stanislao Mattei during his formative years in Bologna. After initial musical training arranged by his parents, Rossini was introduced to Mattei specifically to learn composition, and the friar-composer first entrusted him to Angelo Tesei for preliminary instruction before accepting him into his own school of counterpoint and composition. Rossini later entered the Bologna Musical Lyceum, directed by Mattei, in April 1806, and formally studied counterpoint with him beginning in 1806, with more intensive work between 1809 and 1810.

Under Mattei’s guidance at the Liceo Musicale di Bologna, Rossini developed the solid academic foundation that shaped his early compositional technique. These years of study in Bologna—spanning roughly 1806 to 1810—were central to Rossini’s emergence as a skilled composer, with Mattei recognized as one of his most influential teachers.
