Giovanni Paolo Colonna, born around 1640 in Italy, was a student of Giacomo Carissimi, the renowned Roman School composer and influential music teacher. Colonna studied under Carissimi during his formative years as a church composer, establishing a direct pedagogical link between the two musicians.
Carissimi, active in Rome until his death in 1674, was known for training numerous prominent pupils, including Colonna. This teacher–student relationship placed Colonna within the influential Roman musical tradition shaped by Carissimi’s innovations in the Latin oratorio, masses, motets, and cantatas.
