Girolamo Crescentini studied in Bologna under the renowned singing teacher Lorenzo Gibelli. Crescentini, born in 1762 in Urbania, received his formal vocal training from Gibelli before making his debut in 1783. Gibelli, a highly regarded teacher based in Bologna and known for his extensive experience as a composer, singer, and maestro di cappella, counted Crescentini among his notable pupils.
This teacher–student relationship situated Crescentini within the strong Bolognese musical tradition shaped by Gibelli, who had himself been trained by Giovanni Battista Martini. Under Gibelli’s guidance, Crescentini developed the vocal skills that later made him one of the most celebrated castrato singers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
