Girolamo Diruta met Gioseffo Zarlino in Venice around 1578, during the period when he moved from the convent of Correggio to Venice. Multiple sources state that Diruta probably studied with Zarlino, alongside Claudio Merulo and Costanzo Porta. This places Diruta’s studies under Zarlino within the late 1570s, when Zarlino was serving as maestro di cappella at St. Mark’s Basilica.
Zarlino is explicitly listed among Diruta’s teachers, and Zarlino himself is known to have taught many major figures of the Venetian school, including Diruta. Diruta’s exposure to Zarlino’s teachings occurred in Venice, where he was developing as an organist and theorist prior to the publication of his influential treatise Il Transilvano.
