Girolamo Frescobaldi → Luzzasco Luzzaschi

Studied under

Girolamo Frescobaldi studied under Luzzasco Luzzaschi in Ferrara during his youth. Luzzaschi, a renowned madrigalist, court organist to the d'Este family, and one of the few musicians capable of performing on Nicola Vicentino’s complex archicembalo, taught Frescobaldi both organ playing and the archicembalo. Contemporary accounts describe Frescobaldi as a child prodigy who began taking lessons with Luzzaschi after showing notable talent for the organ. Frescobaldi later dedicated his capriccios to Luzzaschi, calling him a “rare organist,” which indicates the deep respect he held for his teacher.

Their relationship took place in Ferrara, a major musical center in the late sixteenth century, and Luzzaschi’s influence played an important role in shaping Frescobaldi’s early development as a keyboard virtuoso and composer. As a principal figure of the Ferrarese school, Luzzaschi passed on advanced keyboard techniques, contrapuntal knowledge, and exposure to the elite musical environment of the d'Este court, all of which contributed to Frescobaldi’s later achievements.
