Giuseppe Verdi → Ferdinando Provesi

Studied under

In 1824, Giuseppe Verdi began attending lessons with Ferdinando Provesi, who served as the chapel master at the collegiate church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo and the director of the Philharmonic Society in Busseto. Provesi is recognized as the most important of Verdi's early music teachers.

Provesi instructed Verdi in the principles of musical composition, instrumental practice, and counterpoint. Beyond musical training, he also encouraged a passion for serious reading in his student, introducing him to the works of classic authors such as Shakespeare, Dante, Goethe, and Schiller.

From June 1827, Verdi dedicated himself exclusively to music under Provesi's guidance. By the end of 1829, Verdi completed his studies, at which point Provesi declared that he had nothing left to teach him.
