Gustav Wilhelmovich Neuhaus was the father of Heinrich Neuhaus. Heinrich Neuhaus was the son of Gustav Neuhaus, who was the director of a private music school.
In 1899 Gustav Neuhaus founded his own music school in Elisavetgrad; among its students was his son Heinrich Neuhaus. Heinrich later noted that he was in many ways self-taught, since his father’s teaching methods and pianistic principles tended to cause him rejection.
