Hans Bronsart von Schellendorf studied under Franz Liszt in Weimar from 1853 to 1857, becoming a member of the composer's inner circle. In 1857, Bronsart served as the first performer of Liszt's Second Piano Concerto, a work which Liszt dedicated to him.
In correspondence with his teacher, Bronsart often signed his letters as "Hans II," acknowledging his secondary status relative to Hans von Bülow. Bronsart is considered one of the most significant figures of the Weimar composition school. Additionally, in 1861, he married Ingeborg Stark, a pianist and composer who also studied under Liszt.
