Igor Stravinsky → Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov

Studied under

Igor Stravinsky took private lessons from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov from 1904 to 1906. Rimsky-Korsakov offered him lessons twice a week, which Stravinsky attended parallel to his lessons with V. P. Kalafati. Under Rimsky-Korsakov's guidance, Stravinsky wrote his first works in 1906, including a scherzo, a piano sonata, and the suite "Faun and Shepherdess".

Stravinsky is listed as one of Rimsky-Korsakov's students. He later described studying with Rimsky-Korsakov as a great advantage in his musical education, characterizing his teacher as remarkable, attentive, thorough, wise, and witty. Stravinsky noted that Rimsky-Korsakov never praised his pupils and could be ruthlessly severe in his criticism.
