Jean Sibelius studied under Friedrich Richard Faltin during his formative years as a young musician in Helsinki. Faltin, a prominent Finnish composer, organist, and professor of German origin, taught the organ class at the Helsinki Conservatory from 1882 to 1910. Sibelius was among his students, receiving training that contributed to his broader musical education and development.
The relationship between the two was primarily pedagogical, with Faltin serving as an early mentor who provided Sibelius with technical and artistic instruction in organ performance. Although Sibelius later became known mainly for his symphonic and orchestral works, his studies with Faltin formed part of the solid musical foundation that supported his emergence as one of Finland’s greatest composers.
