Johann Christian Bach studied under Giovanni Battista Martini during his stay in Italy beginning in 1754. In Bologna, Bach received advanced musical training from Padre Martini, who was one of the most prominent theorists and pedagogues of the eighteenth century. Martini instructed him in composition and counterpoint, further developing the young composer's skills after his earlier studies in Germany.
Padre Martini, renowned for his mastery of the Roman school of composition and his influential teaching, counted Bach among his notable students, alongside figures such as Mozart and Mysliveček. Martini’s guidance significantly shaped Bach’s artistic development during this formative Italian period, contributing to Bach’s later success as both a composer and performer.
