Johann Christian Bach → Johann Sebastian Bach

Related to

Johann Christian Bach was the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach and received his earliest musical instruction directly from him in Leipzig. Their relationship, however, was brief in terms of formal study, as Johann Sebastian’s declining health and eventual death ended this period of guidance. Despite the short duration, Johann Sebastian’s instruction provided Johann Christian with his foundational musical training before he continued his studies under his half‑brother Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.

As father and son, their musical styles diverged significantly, with Johann Christian becoming a leading figure of the emerging Classical era, while Johann Sebastian embodied the height of the Baroque tradition. Contemporary accounts noted that these stylistic differences reflected changing artistic eras rather than any estrangement. Johann Christian later expressed a conscious turn toward new musical ideals, even referring to his father’s style with the phrase "alte Perucke" (“old wig”), signaling the generational shift from Baroque complexity to Classical elegance. Johann Sebastian lived to see in Johann Christian the early signs of a gifted, forward‑looking musician, although he did not witness his son’s later fame as the "London Bach" or "English Bach".
