Johann David Heinichen studied music under Johann Schelle at the Thomasschule Leipzig in the late 17th century. Schelle, who served as cantor of the Thomasschule from 1677 until his death in 1701, provided Heinichen with his initial formal musical instruction during the period when the young composer attended the school in Leipzig. Under Schelle’s guidance, Heinichen was introduced to foundational musical training that included early studies in composition, singing, and the musical traditions of the Thomaskirche.
