Johann Paul von Westhoff received a solid musical education in Dresden as a pupil of Heinrich Schütz, who died in 1672. Schütz, serving as court composer and Kapellmeister in Dresden, provided the young Westhoff with foundational training that preceded Westhoff’s entry into the Dresden Hofkapelle in 1674. This teacher‑student relationship placed Westhoff within the influential musical tradition shaped by Schütz and linked him directly to one of the most important German composers of the early Baroque.
