John Field studied under the Italian composer and pianist Muzio Clementi after moving with his family to London in 1793. Clementi became his principal teacher, providing Field with systematic musical training and exposing him to the London musical world. In addition to formal instruction, Field worked in Clementi’s piano workshop as a demonstrator, which further strengthened their professional connection.
The relationship extended beyond traditional lessons, as Clementi actively supported Field’s early career. In 1802 he organized a European tour for Field, during which they traveled together to Paris and Vienna, and in 1803 they arrived in Saint Petersburg. Field’s development as a virtuoso pianist and later as a composer was strongly shaped by Clementi’s pedagogical influence and by the opportunities he created for his young pupil.
