Julian Fontana studied under Józef Elsner at the conservatory in Warsaw, where he received musical training in addition to his university law studies. This period of instruction placed Fontana among Elsner’s notable pupils and occurred during Fontana’s early life in Warsaw prior to his departure from Poland after the November Uprising of 1830–1831.
