From 1887, Konstantin Igumnov took private piano lessons from Nikolai Zverev while studying at the First Moscow Classical Gymnasium; he studied with Zverev at the same time as Sergei Rachmaninoff and Alexander Scriabin.
Zverev ran a musical boarding school in Moscow where gifted young pianists lived and studied; Igumnov was among the pupils who lived and studied there.
