Marc-Antoine Charpentier → Giacomo Carissimi

Studied under

Marc-Antoine Charpentier spent two or three years in Rome, probably between 1667 and 1669, where he studied under the Italian composer Giacomo Carissimi. During this period, Charpentier was directly taught by Carissimi, acquiring a deep knowledge of contemporary Italian musical practice and falling strongly under his stylistic influence.

This apprenticeship in Rome played a decisive role in shaping Charpentier’s musical language. Under Carissimi’s guidance, he absorbed the techniques of the early Baroque Roman School, especially in sacred vocal genres such as the oratorio. Charpentier later carried these influences back to France, becoming one of Carissimi’s most significant French pupils and transmitting elements of his teacher’s style into French Baroque music.
