Before entering the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Mikhail Gnesin showed his romances to Anatoly Lyadov, who gave them an approving review and advised him to enroll in the institution. Gnesin later studied under Lyadov, spending a year in his free composition class following the death of his teacher Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. He graduated from the conservatory in 1909.
