In 1741, while in Bologna for the production of his opera Ezio, Niccolò Jommelli met Padre Giovanni Battista Martini. Contemporary accounts, including those of Saverio Mattei, state that Jommelli studied under Martini during this period. Although his constant travels prevented him from taking regular lessons, he nonetheless sought Martini’s guidance and is said to have learned from him “the art of escaping any anguish or aridity.” Their relationship included mutual critique, but Jommelli’s association with Martini was influential enough that he presented to the Accademia Filarmonica a five-voice fugue, Sicut erat, as part of the admission process—an effort shaped by his contact with Martini.
