Peter von Winter studied under Antonio Salieri in Vienna, having traveled there in 1780 together with colleague Franz Tausch specifically to receive instruction from the renowned Italian composer. According to English-language sources, Winter was sent on a scholarship to Vienna in 1781/82 for this purpose. During this period he met Salieri again and undertook formal musical studies under his guidance.
