Stanisław Moniuszko studied under Carl Friedrich Rungenhagen during his formal musical training in Berlin between 1837 and 1840. Rungenhagen, a renowned German choirmaster, composer, and pedagogue, provided Moniuszko with instruction in composition and choral conducting at the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin. This period formed an important stage in Moniuszko’s artistic development as he refined his technical skills under Rungenhagen’s guidance.
The connection between them was that of teacher and student, with Rungenhagen serving as one of the key mentors who shaped Moniuszko’s musical foundations. Through this mentorship, Moniuszko was exposed to the rigorous musical traditions cultivated by Rungenhagen, who was notable for his dedication to the works of Bach and Handel. Their relationship contributed significantly to Moniuszko’s growth into a major figure in Polish national music.
