Richter is listed among the major musicians raised by Neuhaus. In 1937, Richter entered the Moscow Conservatory to study in Neuhaus's piano class.
After Richter was expelled in the autumn for refusing to study general education subjects and returned to Odessa, he soon returned to Moscow and was reinstated at the conservatory at Neuhaus's insistence.
