Tommaso Traetta studied under Leonardo de Leo in Naples during his formative years as a young composer. According to historical accounts, he attended several Neapolitan conservatories between 1738 and 1748, during which Leonardo de Leo, one of the leading figures of the Neapolitan operatic school, was among his principal teachers. Under Leo’s instruction, Traetta was exposed to rigorous training in harmony, counterpoint, and operatic composition.
Leo’s influence on Traetta occurred at a crucial stage in his education, shaping the stylistic and technical foundations that later supported Traetta’s development into a significant composer of opera seria and a contributor to operatic reform.
