Vincenzo Bellini studied under Giovanni Furno at the Real Collegio di Musica di San Sebastiano in Naples beginning in 1819. Furno was Bellini’s first teacher at the conservatory, where the young composer worked through exercises in harmony and accompaniment under his guidance. These studies formed an important part of Bellini’s early musical training as he adjusted to the rigorous curriculum of the Neapolitan school.
Furno, widely regarded as one of the finest teachers in Naples, was known for his expertise in partimenti and for training many prominent composers. Bellini’s foundational instruction with Furno helped prepare him for later studies in counterpoint and composition and supported his rapid development during his early years in Naples.
