Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart → Giovanni Martin

Studied under

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart studied under Giovanni Battista Martini during his first journey to Italy, meeting him in Bologna between December 1769 and March 1771. Martini, a renowned composer, theorist, and leading pedagogue of the period, examined Mozart’s abilities in counterpoint and supported his acceptance into the prestigious Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna in 1770, an exceptional distinction for the 14‑year‑old composer.

During this period, Mozart received guidance in strict counterpoint from Martini, whose teaching methods were grounded in the traditions of the earlier Roman school. Martini’s influence contributed significantly to Mozart’s technical development, particularly in the areas of polyphony and academic composition, and Mozart later expressed admiration and gratitude for the instruction he received while in Bologna.
