Adele Marcus
Adele Marcus (February 22, 1906 – May 3, 1995) was an American pianist and music educator. She was born in Kansas City and was the thirteenth child in the family of a rabbi who had emigrated from Russia.
Marcus studied at the Juilliard School with Josef Lhevinne, later serving as his assistant, and also studied with Artur Schnabel. She won the Naumburg Competition for young performers in 1928 and toured actively in the United States during the 1930s.
From 1954 to 1990 she taught at the Juilliard School, becoming far better known as a teacher than as a concert pianist. Among her notable students were Enrique Batis, Cy Coleman, Horacio Gutierrez, Jose Carlos Cocarelli, Stephen Hough, Pascal Nemirovski, and Zimone Bart, as well as many others.
Marcus died in New York City at the age of 89. Her death was noted in an obituary in The New York Times.
