Aleksandr Valerianovich Verzhbilovich was a prominent Russian cellist and music educator. Born in Saint Petersburg to the family of a geography teacher, he demonstrated musical talent early during his studies at the Annenschule. He entered the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1869 and graduated in just two years under the guidance of Karl Davydov. In 1898, he was distinguished with the title of Soloist of His Imperial Majesty.

His performance career was extensive, beginning as the principal cellist in the Italian Opera orchestra in Saint Petersburg in 1877, followed by a tenure at the Imperial Russian Opera at the Mariinsky Theatre from 1882 to 1885. Verzhbilovich was a renowned chamber musician, performing in trios with artists such as Anna Esipova and Leopold Auer, and serving as a member of the Russian Musical Society quartet alongside Auer, Ivan Pickel, and Ieronim Weickmann. He toured internationally, appearing in Constantinople, Vienna, and Paris, and notably participated in the 1890 premiere of Tchaikovsky's string sextet "Souvenir de Florence".

From 1885, Verzhbilovich served as a professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, where he influenced a generation of cellists. His notable students included Semyon Kozolupov and Leopold Rostropovich. Contemporaries praised his playing for its extraordinary singing quality, powerful tone, and rich nuance, particularly highlighting his interpretation of energetic and lyrical works.
