Anaida Sumbatyan
Anaida Stepanovna Sumbatyan (1905–1985) was a distinguished Soviet pianist and music pedagogue. She served as a piano teacher at the Central Music School in Moscow for many years. She holds the unique distinction of being the only teacher to have trained two winners of the International Tchaikovsky Competition: Vladimir Ashkenazy and Vladimir Krainev. In recognition of her contributions to music education, she was named an Honored School Teacher of the RSFSR in 1966 and received the Medal "For Labour Valour" in 1954.
Her pedagogical influence extended to many other notable musicians. Among her students were Nelly Akopyan, Nina Kogan, Tigran Alikhanov, Oxana Yablonskaya, Constantine Orbelian, Igor Bezrodny, Sergey Musaelyan, Dmitry Feofanov, Maxim Mogilevsky, and Filipp Koltsov. Beyond her teaching duties, Sumbatyan maintained close friendships with prominent musical figures of her time, including Sviatoslav Richter, Nina Dorliak, Heinrich Neuhaus, and Daniil Shafran.
According to the memoirs of her student Oxana Yablonskaya, Sumbatyan was an outstanding personality and an exceptional educator possessed of an unsurpassed pedagogical gift. She was known for her impeccable taste and strict standards; she did not tolerate the slightest familiarity or simplification in performance, demanding the highest level of artistic integrity from her students.
