Anastasia Virsaladze
Anastasia Davydovna Abdushelishvili-Virsaladze was a distinguished Georgian pianist and pedagogue who played a foundational role in the development of piano education in Georgia. Born in Kutaisi, she pursued her musical studies at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory under the tutelage of the renowned Anna Yesipova. She was the grandmother of the celebrated contemporary pianist Eliso Virsaladze.
While she was active as a concert pianist, her primary legacy lies in her teaching career. She began teaching at the Tbilisi Conservatory in 1921, where she served as the head of the piano department from 1929 to 1946 and held the title of professor starting in 1932. She authored essays on piano methodology and trained a generation of significant musicians, including Dmitri Bashkirov, Lev Vlasenko, and David Toradze.
Virsaladze was highly respected in the Soviet musical community, serving on the juries of the second and third All-Union Piano Competitions in the 1930s. Her contributions were officially recognized with the title of People's Artist of the Georgian SSR in 1960 and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. She is buried in the Didube Pantheon in Tbilisi, and a children's art school in the city is named in her honor.
