Garrick Ohlsson is an American pianist born on April 3, 1948, in New York. He graduated from the Juilliard School, where he studied first with Sascha Gorodnitzki and later, from 1968 to 1971, with Rosina Lhévinne and Olga Barabini. He also received consultation from Claudio Arrau and Irma Wolpe.

Ohlsson holds first prizes from three prestigious international competitions: the Busoni Competition (1966), the Montreal International Music Competition (1968), and the International Chopin Piano Competition (1970). In 1969, at the initiative of his producer Sol Hurok, he undertook a major European tour. Following his success at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw, he embarked on an American tour that included concerts in over 40 cities.

He is a recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize (1994) for outstanding achievement in the performance of classical music.
