Georg August Gross was a German violinist, pianist, music journalist, teacher, and composer born in 1801 in Königsberg. He was the brother of Johann Benjamin Gross and received his early musical education in Elbing under Christian Urban. By 1820 he was active as the first violinist in the municipal theater of Memel, establishing himself as a capable performer early in his career. In 1830 he undertook a concert tour as a soloist, further broadening his reputation.

Between 1831 and 1833 Gross worked in Lübeck before moving to Hildesheim, where he married Therese Liste, a member of an influential local musical family and a great-granddaughter of organist and composer Anton Liste. In 1837 he settled in Hamburg, where he remained for the rest of his life. Between 1837 and 1839 he published the Hamburg Musical Newspaper, an important regional periodical that issued 52 numbers.

In the mid-1840s Gross became head of the Hamburg Society for Folk Song, an organization that commissioned the construction of the concert hall Tonhalle. As a pedagogue he was among the earliest teachers of Louise Jaffa, contributing to the development of young musicians in Hamburg. He composed vocal and choral works, although his instrumental compositions were left unpublished.
