Giaches de Wert was a Franco-Flemish composer of the late Renaissance active in Italy from the 1550s. He was one of the key figures of the late madrigal style, published numerous books of madrigals and motets, and had a substantial influence on the development of early Baroque vocal music, including on Claudio Monteverdi. He combined the Franco-Flemish polyphonic tradition with Italian expressive text-setting and helped establish musicianship at the courts of Ferrara and Mantua.
