Giacomo Antonio Perti was an Italian Baroque composer who spent the majority of his career in Bologna, serving as maestro di cappella at the Basilica of San Petronio for sixty years. Born on 6 June 1661 in Crevalcore and died on 10 April 1756 in Bologna, he studied early under his uncle Lorenzo Perti and later with Rocco Laurenti, Giuseppe Corsi da Celano and Petronio Franceschini. His prolific output includes some 30 operas, 28 masses, 120 psalms, 54 motets and 142 solo cantatas, reflecting the traditions of the Roman school and showing influences from Carissimi, Cesti and Luigi Rossi.

Perti worked not only in Bologna but also in Venice, Rome and Parma, gaining wide experience before succeeding his uncle in 1690 as maestro di cappella at San Pietro. In addition to his long service at San Petronio from 1692, he directed the Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna for many years, further establishing his prominence in the city’s musical life.

He taught numerous students, among them Giuseppe Torelli, Giovanni Battista Martini, Francesco Antonio Uttini and Pirro Albergati, shaping the next generation of Italian composers. Beyond operas, masses and psalms, he also composed oratorios, hymns and serenades, contributing extensively to both operatic and sacred repertories.
