Hermann Wollenhaupt
Hermann Adolf Wollenhaupt was an American pianist and composer of German origin. He was born on September 17, 1827, in Schkeuditz, Germany. He was the brother of Bruno Wollenhaupt. He received his musical education in Leipzig, where he studied piano under Julius Knorr and composition under Moritz Hauptmann.
In 1845, Wollenhaupt moved to New York, where he lived and worked for the remainder of his life, establishing himself primarily as a piano teacher. He enjoyed significant authority and popularity within the city's musical community. He passed away in New York on September 18, 1863.
As a composer, Wollenhaupt authored approximately one hundred piano pieces, including waltzes, polkas, marches, and other genre works; some of these compositions continue to be used in musical pedagogy. Additionally, in co-authorship with T. Hagen, he published a textbook titled "New Method for the Pianoforte and methodical guide for the Pianoforte teacher" in 1861.
